Anonymous said: What are your thoughts/response to this. Someone on my Facebook posted an info-graphic: "Nobody thinks that these people are representative of Christians" (picture of Ku Klux Klan). Followed by, "So why do so many think these people are representative of Muslims?" (picture of ISIS/Hamas). I can't help but feel this person is a ridiculously naive, left wing, wet fish. In no way am I racist, and I treat everyone I meet with respect and honesty, but WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE?

Can everyone please stop fucking acting like Islam is a race? It’s not. Do not be afraid to criticise an ideology. You wouldn’t be afraid to criticise Nazism would you? No. Be brave and stand up to them.

Anyway, thanks for the message :) I agree with you, there is absolutely no equivalence here. These people who are demonising Christians (and bringing up centuries old religious conflicts to do so) forget that Christians aren’t the ones beheading people and torturing them. They aren’t the ones forcing women to be second-class citizens. They aren’t the ones who believe that terrorism is acceptable and justified. They aren’t the ones who want to slaughter the Jews. Christianity has moved past the barbarism of the past, and has consistently denounced it for 2,000 years. After 1,400 years of conquest, slavery, rape, slaughter and oppressive policies, Islam has not.

All i can think of for this actual ass piece of a reply is:
Hitler was a Christian
Nazi Germany was a Christian country, they were not by any means secular
Women were second class citizens (baby makers) in nazi germany and lets not forget about the holocaust
Fuckin idiot

I’ve had time to think of my reply to this piece of shit question, and here it is.

First off, the issue here is the answerer views history as a flat line (i.e. current incarnations of radical Islam are barbarous, therefore all Islam has been historically barbarous) which is categorically untrue in every facet. Many of the Middle Eastern and North African countries whose religious denomination is mostly Muslim today were once the seat of the world’s greatest intellectual and cultural advances . This included the earliest universities, as well as great expansive libraries (the same ones oft-burned by the Mongols) and in general Islam was seen as the religion of enlightenment and the pursuit of knowledge, hence the reason for the mass conversion which took place at the time (which mostly followed trading routes to the west, but I need not print a textbook worth of content to get my point across.)

Secondly, to assume Christianity (and other major world religions) have moved on from barbarism (torture, violence, imperialist expansion etc) is also kinda untrue. You only have to look as far as the God knows how many souls currently incarcerated without due process of the law (criminal charges) in places such as Guantanamo Bay, in which regular torture is conducted by citizens of a Christian country (they may not use their religion to justify their actions, but they are still Christians committing atrocities as I.S. are Muslims committing atrocities)

Thirdly, the KKK is still totally a thing. As is the Westboro Baptist church, as is the militant Christian wing responsible for attacks on abortion clinics, and on the LGBT community, and any other left-liberal institution which displeases them.

Also, and this is a major point. Israel recently undertook a process of mass genocide against the citizens of a primarily Muslim denomination in Palestine. This CAN be attributed to both religious and racial aggravations and is EXACTLY the same as what IS are doing (although for some reason the world sees it as more legitimate when it’s with rockets and mortars and not knives and bullets.)

In short, the only person being ‘naive’ is you, to assume that Islam is a violent religion simply because some fanatics (who by the way, take the scripture WAY out of context)  are currently being violent. Trust me, if every one of the 1.3 billion followers of Islam were as violent as you say they are, then you’d know about it, because you’d be dead. Way dead. Hella dead even.

[Also, Footnote: can we please stop using the word ‘left’ and ‘left-wing’ as an insult? Believe it or not, but the entirety of the sane world does not reside within the political persuasions of the centre-right, so don’t treat a differing political opinion as being abhorrently deviant or inherently misguided, thanks]

" were once the seat of the world’s greatest intellectual and cultural advances "

Now I know that’s not true. Muslims appropriated and added on to largely European and Asian advances.

places such as Guantanamo Bay, in which regular torture is conducted by citizens of a Christian country”

They’re not compelled by their religion.

the KKK is still totally a thing. As is the Westboro Baptist church,”

lol and they hold no political power, are treated as criminals when they break the law, and their actions do not conform with Christian teachings at all.

Israel recently undertook a process of mass genocide against the citizens of a primarily Muslim denomination in Palestine.”

omg are these people for real? this is getting exhausting.

Trust me, if every one of the 1.3 billion followers of Islam were as violent as you say they are, then you’d know about it, because you’d be dead. Way dead. Hella dead even.”

Not really, because they’ve been trying for the last 1,400 years to destroy Western civilisation and they have never succeeded. I think maybe you’re forgetting the fact that they realise that we have the upper hand militarily. Thats why they resort to terrorism.

can we please stop using the word ‘left’ and ‘left-wing’ as an insult?”

I think being called a leftist is pretty insulting. So no.

Hi. Out of pure interest, do you watch a lot of Fox News? Because you really sound like you watch a lot of Fox News.

And you know what, it is REALLY comforting to see a religion as the ‘enemy religion’ and one that is ‘the good religion’ its reassuring, it makes you comfortable with your understanding of the world, I understand why you would want to do that, but unfortunately, the truth is rarely so black and white.

I’m going to simplify this, because you both seemed to misunderstand and take out of context much of what I said. I shall do so in your helpful bullet point style format.

1) Now I know that’s not true. Muslims appropriated and added on to largely European and Asian advances.

Erm, no. That actually isn’t correct. I wanted to avoid an in depth historical debate (it takes a lot of fact checking and research on my part to ensure I’m telling the truth) But I’m talking about the time Europe was in the dark ages here, when the Europe was deeply entrenched in Feudalism.

- The oldest known university (that means predating the ones in Europe or Asia; i.e THE FIRST EVER ONE) is the University of Al-Karaouine: Located in Fes, Morocco, this university originally was a mosque founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri, a woman. It developed into one of the leading universities for natural sciences. It wasn’t until 1957 that the university added mathematics, physics, chemistry and foreign languages. This university is considered the oldest continuously-operating degree-granting university in the world by the Guiness Book of World Records.

-The second oldest university is also a Muslim university, and it’s the Al-Azhar University: This university, located in Egypt. Founded in 970-972, this university serves as a centre for Arabic literature and Sunni Islamic learning. Al-Azhar university concentrates upon a religious syllabus, which pays special attention to the Quranic sciences and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad on the one hand, while also teaching all modern fields of science.

I could go on. There’s literally thousands of others that predate even the earliest Christian universities: I’ll spare you the lecture.

So suck it up.

2) I explained the Guantanamo bay thing, you clearly didn’t read that bit.

3) lol and they hold no political power, are treated as criminals when they break the law, and their actions do not conform with Christian teachings at all.

This is my favourite one. Shall I tell you why? You literally described I.S. and Boko Haram. They ARE treated as criminals, and they don’t conform to Islamic teachings at all, just like their Christian counterparts. Extremists are the same across the spectrum, they don’t care for religion, not really, they just use it as an excuse to forward their world-view.

Yes, those groups do have more power than their Christian counterparts, and they are being fought back by the actual legitimate Muslim governments of the respective countries they reside in, with mixed success. And I believe in time, just as the KKK dwindled, so will I.S. Time makes relics of us all.

4) I can see that you’ve already made up your mind on the Israel issue, and I understand that even posting pictures of schools getting levelled, or the death tolls of children in the Gaza strip, or the proof of Israel bombing UN humanitarian centres isn’t going to change your mind, shame really.

 5) [This one is a question] So, like, when you see someone of a Muslim persuasion on the street, are you like ‘oh man, that person REALLY wants to overthrow my way of life right now, I feel threatened.’ I just want to see how far this universal phobia of Islam goes within you. Maybe you should see a therapist about that.

6) I think being called a leftist is pretty insulting. So no.”

Well I am one. And I’m not a huge fan of being used as an insult.

But sure, if you want to be bigoted about it’s fine, see if I care.

[Footnote: I can see you’re a big fan of this argument thing, so this will be my last contact with you. I have said my piece, and I have no desire to continue this dialogue further. Goodbye.]
